A marking sampler was a of piece cloth young girls used to exercise stitches
to mark their linen. Later as a housewife, she would embroider her
household linen with her initials and a number to keep track of her
linens. When she had mastered the marking sampler she would work on
a darning sampler allowing her to extend the life of costly household
textiles.
