China is rich with embroidery. I have limited myself to the nicely embroidered
childrens hats, baby boots and baby shoes. Most of it used to belong to the Miao
people of South West China. Symbolism is very important to them.
Lotus shoes (see article in Handwerken zonder Grenzen 125) are
an important part of my China textile collection. Millions of Chinese
women suffered dreadful pains in order to achieve their ideal of beauty:
the golden lotus foot, only three inches long.
